Description
Fort Pickens is a historic remnant of U.S. military presence located on the west end of Florida's Santa Rosa Island. It was erected shortly after the Spanish-American War to defend the entrance into Pensacola Harbor and the East Bay from the Gulf Of Mexico. During the Civil War it remained in Union hands and housed both Union soldiers to man the battlements and some number of Confederate prisoners. During WW I and WW II it was used for coastal defense and still houses gun emplacements from all three wars. This image, shot from among the fort's housing and utility buildings, captures one of the battlements housing a Civil War era cannon aimed out to sea. Fort Pickens is now part of the Gulf National Seashore administered by the U.S. National Park Service.
